Transcendent is inspired by the resilience and perseverance required to overcome challenges and obstacles in order to succeed, a spirit exemplified by Harry Jerome. The work manifests as a dynamic and iconically-scaled sculptural form that soars above the lobby space, enveloping visitors within its highly reflective surface. Inspired by athletic tracks, courts, and arenas, its elliptical form features mirrored surfaces interrupted by linear fissures. These openings break the reflection into smaller planes that bend light in multiple directions, revealing a brilliant blue interior structure. The work celebrates the determination to move beyond obstacles while drawing a parallel to North Vancouver’s waterways, where creeks, streams, and rivers continually find their way around anything that stands in their path.
