Below Before Between is an integrated artwork for the 5th Street underpass that reflects Calgary’s enduring relationship with water by connecting pedestrians to the city’s geological and hydrological history beneath its urban infrastructure. The underpass links the Bow and Elbow Rivers while offering a rare subterranean experience shaped by an undulating precast concrete wall molded from a fossilized ripple stone from the Rundle Rock (Kamenka) Quarry, referencing the area’s prehistoric inland sea. Sloping ridge elements on the opposite side evoke esker formations created by glacial meltwater, and together these illuminated, colourful elements unify the underpass into a dynamic and immersive environment.
